In 2025, total U.S. utility-scale electricity net generation reached approximately 4,429 billion kWh (4.43 trillion kWh), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Based on the preliminary 2025 generation shares and total utility-scale output of ~4,429 billion kWh (plus estimated generation shares), the breakdown by electricity source is as follows:
- Natural Gas: ~1,807 billion kWh (~40.8% share)
- Nuclear: ~784 billion kWh (~17.7% share)
- Coal: ~735 billion kWh (~16.6% share)
- Wind: ~487 billion kWh (~11.0% share)
- Solar: ~310 billion kWh (~7.0% share) (Note: Small-scale solar PV added roughly another 93 billion kWh on top of utility-scale totals).
- Hydropower (Conventional): ~266 billion kWh (~6.0% share)
- Biomass: ~44 billion kWh (~1.0% share)
- So approximately 42.7% of electricity production in the US was carbon neutral in the US in 2025 with nuclear energy as the largest source of carbon neutral electricity production.
