When Worlds Collide

"Sooner or later disasters such as an asteroid collision or a nuclear war could wipe us all out. But once we spread out into space and establish independent colonies, our future should be safe," Professor Stephen Hawking (2006)

  1. That's too funny. We can't keep it together here and we started with an unspoiled planet supporting us and we leave trails of junk behind us now that do not brake down to be used again. Hurry up asteroid of the Universe is in trouble.

  2. The history of civilization has always been a struggle with over population in relation to resources. Ten thousand years ago there were perhaps only 10 to 20 million people on the entire planet. Now we are approaching 7 billion people as our global population continues to grow.

There's enough asteroid material in our solar system to build enough Earth-like artificial worlds to accomodate trillions if not quadrillions of people and enough space solar energy to power these civilizations until the sun dies. So I wouldn't mind if most humans in the next few hundred years left the Earth allowing it to return to its natural state. The Earth could become one great national park.

But confining our entire civilization solely to our planet of evolutionary origin would be foolish, IMO, and could lead to the extinction of our species.
